Foundations

Building Communication, Body Control, and Partnership Through Reward-Based Training

The Foundations pathway focuses on developing clear communication, responsiveness, emotional regulation, and practical handling skills through reward-based groundwork and interactive learning. Sessions are designed to help horses and handlers build understanding together while developing the physical and mental skills that support future riding, liberty work, and everyday partnership.

What You Will Learn

 

  • Backing and spatial awareness

  • Shoulder and hindquarter control

  • Turns on the forehand and haunches

  • Side pass and beginning lateral movement

  • Leg yield concepts

  • Beginning shoulder-in and haunches-in

  • Targeting for movement and positioning

  • Transitions between exercises

  • Emotional regulation and focus during training

  • Applying groundwork concepts to riding and real-world handling

What to Expect

 

Foundations sessions focus on helping horses and handlers develop communication, consistency, and understanding through practical exercises and guided learning.

Sessions may include:

 

  • groundwork exercises,

  • obstacle work,

  • movement shaping,

  • discussion and observation,

  • and adapting exercises to the goals and experience level of both horse and handler.

 

The focus is not simply on completing exercises, but on developing thoughtful, willing participation and clearer communication between horse and human.
